Insert a check before taking the queen

The queen on c6 can be captured immediately, but the forcing bishop check improves the move order before White collects it.

Lesson

White to move. Main line: 1. Bxf7+ Kh8 2. Qxc6

Bxf7+ is a zwischenzug—an in-between move played before the expected capture. Because it is check, Black must answer it. The bishop collects a pawn with tempo while the queen on c6 remains unable to escape.

After ...Kh8, Qxc6 wins the queen. Capturing on c6 immediately also wins material, but the intermediate check adds a pawn and improves the bishop’s activity at no cost because Black never receives a free move.

Before every obvious recapture, pause and scan checks, captures and direct threats. The zwischenzug works when your forcing move changes the position profitably while preserving the original capture for the following move.
