Zwischenzug before the recapture

Black has just taken on d5 and expects the queen to recapture. White first inserts a rook check — a zwischenzug — and changes which rook survives the exchange.

Lesson

White to move. Main line: 1. Re8+ Kf7 2. Qxd5+ Rxd5 3. Rxc8

The automatic 1.Qxd5? trades queens and misses the loose rook on c8. With 1.Re8+!, White makes Black answer the check before resolving the capture on d5.

After 1...Kf7 2.Qxd5+ Rxd5, the rook that moved to e8 can take c8. The in-between move has changed the move order and won the exchange.

When a recapture looks forced, pause and scan checks, captures and direct threats first. Zwischenzugs live in that single extra tempo.
