Qd5 checks the king on g8 along one diagonal and eyes the undefended rook on a8 along the other. Black must answer the check — and loses the rook next move, wherever the king goes.
The queen is the game’s best double-attacker because she strikes along eight lines at once. The recurring pattern: a centralised queen, a checked king, and a loose piece in the corner. Loose pieces drop off.
The habit that prevents this is simple: keep your pieces defended, and keep them off the lines your opponent’s queen can reach with check. A rook on a8 is not badly placed — it is badly placed while the king can be checked on the same diagonal.
