Back-rank mate in one — Chess Library

The most common mating pattern in practical chess. Black’s king looks safe behind its pawns — and that is exactly the problem: the pawns that shield it also trap it on the back rank.

The three pawns on f7, g7 and h7 take away every escape square in front of the king. The rook only needs an open file to reach the eighth rank, and here the a-file is completely open.

In real games this pattern decides thousands of club games: a player wins material, forgets the back rank, and gets mated by a single rook check. The standard prophylaxis is to make luft — playing h6 or g6 at some quiet moment so the king has an escape square.
