Black grabs a pawn on c4 and hangs on to it, accepting a wrecked queenside for two connected passed pawns. Material against structure, decided in the endgame.

Queen's Gambit Declined: Semi-Slav, Abrahams Variation (D31). The line runs 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 c6 4. Nf3 dxc4 5. a4 Bb4 6. e3 b5 7. Bd2 a5 — the move order matters, and this is the one the theory follows.

The queenside pawns on a5, b5 and c6 can become connected passers, but they also leave holes and cost Black development time. White attacks the chain with b3 or e4 while using the center.

Do not treat this as a normal Queen’s Gambit pawn recovery. Black intends to keep c4; White’s compensation is the lead in development and pressure against the stretched queenside.
