Catalan Opening: Closed (E08). The line runs 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. g3 d5 4. Bg2 Be7 5. Nf3 O-O 6. O-O Nbd7 7. Qc2 — the move order matters, and this is the one the theory follows.

The g2-bishop pressures b7 through the long diagonal, even when Black’s d5-pawn appears to block it. Exchanges in the center can reveal that pressure without warning.

White typically builds with Qc2, Rd1 and Nbd2; Black seeks ...c6, ...b6 or ...dxc4. The strategic battle is whether Black can neutralize the bishop before the queenside opens.
