White to move. Main line: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 Bb4+ 4. Bd2 Qe7 5. g3 Nc6 6. Bg2 Bxd2+ 7. Qxd2
The check 3...Bb4+ develops a piece and makes White reveal a defensive setup. Bd2 offers a bishop trade without damaging the pawns, while Black’s ...Qe7 supports the bishop and keeps several central pawn structures available.
White fianchettoes and Black develops before exchanging on d2. The queen recapture preserves the pawn structure and connects the rooks later, but it also places the queen where a future ...Ne4 or ...d5 can gain time.
The Bogo-Indian is strategically flexible rather than tactical by force. Black can choose ...d5, ...c5 or ...b6 after seeing White’s setup. White should use the bishop pair and central space, while making sure the queen on d2 does not become a target.
