Tal–Lautier: the Magician’s final tournament win

Mikhail Tal defeated Joël Lautier in Barcelona in 1992 in the last tournament game he won. The score carries historical weight, but it is also a rich fighting game that moves from opening tactics into a long technical ending.

Tal sacrifices a bishop with 15.Bxe5 to open lines, then uses 17.Nd4 and 18.Nf5 to attack the queen and king. Queenside castling by Black allows the rook capture on a6 and a tactical sequence that restores the material balance.

After queens come off, Tal’s rook and knight remain more active. He centralizes the king, creates kingside passed pawns and prevents Lautier’s rook from becoming permanently active behind them.

The ending culminates in the f-pawn promotion and exchange of rooks, after which Tal’s knight stops the remaining h-pawn. Replaying all 62 moves makes the game more than a historical label: it shows his tactical imagination joined to patient endgame technique.
