Morphy’s Opera Game finish

Paul Morphy has every piece aimed at the uncastled king. The queen is the only piece still in the rook’s way, so he gives it up with check.

Lesson

White to move. Main line: 1. Qb8+ Nxb8 2. Rd8#

1.Qb8+! forces the knight from d7 to b8. The queen disappears, but so does the last defender of d8.

2.Rd8# is the Opera mate: the rook checks along the back rank, the bishop on g5 protects d8, and Black’s own pieces remove every flight square.

Morphy’s finish is a model of development becoming tactics. Material no longer matters when every active piece participates and the defending army is still trapped at home.
